Well, o.s. is for “other service.” It means a service that isn’t the one we typically think of. For example, “Omigod, my door is always open.” That’s not what we usually think of when we open our door. So, it’s a useful and interesting term for us to have in our vocabulary.
And, yes, the fact that someone has died at the door is enough to open it. But if we keep a door open by accident or accidentally, we can still do our job as a human being. Our door is a human being, just not one who has been shut for so long that we cannot remember our own name. In that case, we need to get to the bottom of this situation, and open the door again.
The question is, how do we do that? The best answer is to get to the bottom of the problem and find out why someone has died. If it’s a simple accident, we need to find the person who closed the door, and ask them what happened to make the door open. If the person died of some other cause, then we need to find out who closed the door and why they closed it.
The way I see it, you’ll get a response if you just ask, “What is the name of the person you are looking for?” “Hello, I am looking for X,” or “My name is Y.” If you don’t ask the question, then you are stuck looking through some dead person’s life for a name. You have to go look for it yourself.
Some of the best advice I ever got in my life came from the people who I worked with on my writing. And that’s probably the best part about working with them. A lot of people never ask questions, and that’s okay because they are the best damn writers I know. If you’re never asked, you really should know because you could be missing out.

The middle of a novel can be the beginning of a new novel or the middle of the first novel.
