I have been performing for over a decade. The only thing that has really changed is if I write for a band or just a solo artist. I was never really good at it, and my singing has always been awful in comparison to the quality of what I write. Now that I have had a child and the world around me is much more difficult to navigate, the idea of writing has become a lot more challenging.
The trouble with the idea of music is that you can never really know if it’s good or bad. That’s why you start with a really high bar for your songs, and then you have to constantly compare yourself to other people who have released the same amount of songs and are playing the same sort of music. The result is that you get a lot of songs that sound really good and a lot of songs that don’t.
I have to confess I also get a lot of songs that I am really proud of, or at least I was when I was just starting out. The problem is, when I get these songs out, I never really know what to do with them. I just write on them and hope that they will be good enough to be used in a video game, or that they will be good enough to make it onto a record.
I have to admit I have a problem with the songwriting for beginners part. I think that once you start writing your own stuff, it seems you can just write whatever you want. This is the part where I think we should get rid of this whole thing, because it isnt even music writing.
You can write music, or you can record music. The problem comes with the recording part, which is when the writer is forced to do things that the audience doesn’t understand or agree with. The problem is that the things that the audience does understand are often completely counter to the things that the writer wants to write. For example, I’ve written songs that sound like this and then recorded them, and that makes them sound like this.
I think this is one of the very few things that happens in music that I agree with. If you’re writing music and you want to be understood, you need to write something that sounds like you, which is a very difficult thing to do. The reason this is so difficult is because the audience doesnt get it. What they dont get, is that the way that I write songs is not the same way that I write songs in real life.
For most musicians, the best songs are the ones that sound like they came from the inside of their heads. I have an incredibly hard time with this because most of my songs are not written in a real way. They are written as if I am writing them. And they are written because I am, not because they were.
It sounds like I’m making it all up, but I am not. There are a few things that actually make me write songs. One of them is that I tend to listen to music all day every day. I also write down lyrics to songs almost immediately after I listen to them. The other thing that I do is that I write down a lot of lyrics, and then I re-write them.
That last part sounds exactly like the original meaning of self-help writer’s block (that you’re the one who makes all the bad choices). It’s like that movie Where’s Waldo, except none of the characters are really Waldo. It’s almost like a character in Alice in Wonderland, except the characters are just Alice and her family, and they’re having a bad day.
I am guilty of this too. There are a lot of times when I am not able to make a good choice or write a good song. I could probably write a million songs if I had a million hours of practice, but I just don’t have enough time for it.
