The offbeat is the opposite of the beat, or what we might call a rest. The offbeat accentuates the note that would be on the beat if there were one. It’s important to understand this in order to master your timing and rhythmic skills.

An example of an offbeat is when you tap your foot to music where there are no drums playing but you still want to keep time with it as best as possible so you can dance along with it later on. A beat is a recurring pulse or vibration. A metronome creates regular pulses, and these can be mapped out to make music in standard musical notation on paper. The offbeat accentuates the note that would be on the beat if there were one. Off beats are usually accented with some type of percussion instrument playing a “tick” sound (like cymbals), but it doesn’t have to be as complicated as that when you’re first learning; for example, clapping an eighth-note pattern works just fine too!
