The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. Our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions carry us through our lives so we don’t have to stop and think about it every time we wipe our ass or start a car.
The problem is when we’re on autopilot for so long that we forget were on autopilot. Because when were not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them they control us. Whereas a person with self-awareness is able to exercise a little meta-cognition and say, “Hmm… every time my sister calls me and asks for money, I end up drinking a lot of vodkas.
That’s the other problem with the suggestion that business is good and you can stick with a certain line of work. It’s almost like you are saying, “Well, there are a lot of things I don’t like about living this way, but I think I can live with this line of work.” The problem is, if you are not aware of how your habits, routines, impulses and reactions control you, then you don’t have any control.
We’re not saying you should be all about the work of your job, we’re saying you should try to be more aware of your habits, routines, impulses and reactions. Not just about them, but about them and their connection to your life.
I think the most important thing is for you to not let your habits, routines, impulses and reactions control you. And that is hard to do, but possible. The problem is, as I mentioned above, there are a lot of activities that take place that are so ingrained in our lives that we rarely even notice.
But then again, we all probably have a few bad habits, routines, impulses and reactions. To be aware of them is to realize that those things you feel you should be doing are not what you should be doing. I don’t think I’m doing the most important things by not doing them, but I know I don’t want to be that person who never gets to do that.
It’s easy to say you won’t want to be that guy. But if you’re like most people, you probably don’t. If you want to learn to meditate, you’ll probably want to read a book about it first. If you want to spend more time with your wife in the evening, you’ll probably want to do something.
Well, that would be a lot easier if you didn’t have to do most of the important things by doing less of the important things. You should be able to do the things you want to do, but you are not necessarily “ready”. You should be able to do it someday, but you aren’t ready to start now. And the thing is, if you weren’t ready, you wouldn’t have even started.
There you go. You are not ready to begin what you are doing right now, just because you have no plans to do it. There are lots of reasons why we arent ready to do something, but this is one of the biggest reasons.
The thing is, this list is a long list. There are a lot of things that we could be doing right now. We could be doing a lot of things. You could be doing a lot of things. It doesn’t matter what we do. If we are not ready to begin, then we should just go back to doing things we are already doing.
