You can see that not too many people post photos of prawns on the Internet, and that’s because of a simple fact: You can’t see the prawns you’re eating. Like most food, prawns are transparent, and their tiny eyes and fins are so pretty they’re pretty hard to make out in the dark. But you can see their hearts and intestines clearly enough. And a lot of people do.

This is one of those creatures you may know by name, but you may not know it in the same way. Its name is Prawn, and it lives in the intertidal zone of the ocean, just off the sea floor. A prawn has a body, but it doesnt have a brain. It has a brain, but it doesnt have a heart. It has a heart, but it doesnt have a digestive tract, and it lives completely off the ocean.
Prawns are basically the size of a large white bread. The prawn’s body is covered with long, flexible tentacles. This allows the prawn to swim with a lot of ease. Unlike octopi, the prawn’s body is not used to its own propulsion, so it is much smaller than the octopus.
This is the weirdest and most wonderful thing about prawns. They can have a mind, but it has no capacity for abstract thought, no capacity for thinking about itself, no capacity for any kind of self-expression, no capacity for anything. So when they swim, they swim like a bunch of little brain cells. And when they fall off the ocean floor, they fall like a bunch of little brain cells.
This may be a stretch, but prawns’ ability to fall off the ocean floor is very similar to the way the octopus falls off the sea floor. And to me, this is the most important thing about these tiny little animals. They can be a little freakin’ sad.
