I think this is because most people who go to college or who have jobs in the arts or sciences have never heard of these words. A lot of people who do are probably too busy thinking about how to make their jobs easier to understand what the word “cat” means.
We recently talked about how figurative language is the language of art, and that it is most often used to describe something symbolic, but it can also be used to describe something literal or something symbolic that is not literal. It’s a language that is used in the arts, the sciences, and in everyday life. It’s just a language that many people don’t know how to use.
