I’ve been asked this question a bunch of times, and my answer is always the same. If you just want to write a hit song, go ahead.
Just because you can’t sing, doesn’t mean you can’t. Just because you can’t hit the guitar pedals doesn’t mean you should go slumming with a guitar. You should be writing songs for people. The same goes for the beat, the bass, the melodies, and the lyrics. The right melody (or maybe just the right rhythm) will get you more attention than the wrong one.
I’ve been asked to write a song for a living for years. In no time I could pick it up and show it to anyone. I’ve been asked to write lyrics for a bunch of movies, and still do. I’ve had a few songs on the radio and a few songs in different stages of production, but only a handful of songs have ever been turned into a full-length project.
The thing is that being able to write a hit song for a living is rare and unique. But in the world of music, there are a few very distinct ways to get your music heard. One of the first ways is to get a record deal, and then write the record so well that it will be picked up by a major record label and will be put out by a major label.

But a record company is a bunch of people, not just a bunch of people who like your music, but a bunch of people who like your music in the same way that you like your music. It’s a small group of people who have a lot of power and influence in a company.
The way that record companies work is that they look for songwriters. They look at all the work that you put into it and they determine the most important thing you’ve done. Its usually the melody and the lyrics. So you might be the first writer they see and they say, “Okay. We’re gonna sign you.” They then look at all the songs that you have and they say, “Ok, we’re signing you to some record company.
This is what has happened in the wake of the ’60s phenomenon ‘Hey Jude’. The music industry has become an impersonal black box and you don’t really care who’s writing your music. This is how it works in the modern music industry. The recording industry has become more about the money than the quality.
This is why The Beatles took so long making their hit song Let It Be. The Beatles were never able to be as personal with their music as the commercial music industry wanted. The Beatles were never able to get the commercial/music community to listen to their music with the same intensity as the music industry wanted.
