how does the mood of a story affect the reader

I’ve gotten this question a lot recently, and it’s actually something I’ve thought about as well. I can’t define how or why the mood of a book can affect the way I read it, but I have some ideas. Let me give you an example: when I was a kid, I used to read everything on the stack of books I had in the box.
