The protagonist of a story (a character or narrator) is “the one who’s struggling with the conflict”. The antagonist is “the one who’s winning”.
Some people can be both, but if you don’t think about it, you’d be pretty apt to think that the protagonist of a story a character or narrator is the one whos struggling with the conflict. The antagonist is the one whos winning.
The protagonist of a story is the one that has the conflict. The antagonist is the one whos winning.
Our hero Colt Vahn is the protagonist of Deathloop. He’s the guy that has to go through all of this to defeat a bunch of Visionaries. The antagonist is the guy whos trying to kill him. A few spoilers for the story ahead. The protagonist of Deathloop is the guy whos battling the Visionaries. The antagonist of Deathloop is the guy whos winning.
The protagonist and antagonist of Deathloop are two very different characters. The protagonist has a very clear purpose, to defeat the Visionaries, but he also has a deep-rooted ego that tries to control everything that happens to him to do that. This ego-self control is what gives him the power he has to defeat the Visionaries.
The only thing that Deathloop’s protagonist can do from his own ego is kill one Visionary a day. If he stops killing the Visionaries, the Visionaries will win. If he keeps killing them, the vision of him killing them forever is in jeopardy. It’s just a difference in what the protagonist’s ego wants.
The other big difference between the two is that the protagonist needs to prove his own self-worth to the rest of the world. If he proves himself, he can then prove that his self-worth is justified. If he proves himself to the Visionaries, they will respect him. The protagonist, on the other hand, needs to prove his worth to himself before he can prove his worth to the Visionaries.
Of course, the protagonist of Deathloop can’t prove that he’s worth the rest of the world to, because that’s not what he was built for. He has no power, no prestige no resources. He has no need to prove his worth. In the end, it comes down to what the protagonist decides he’s worth. If there is more to do, he can go do it. If there is less to do, he can choose not to.
Deathloop is a game about the protagonist. The antagonist is the one who has to prove that the protagonist is worth the time and effort to get to where he has to be. After all, he is the one who is going to have to change everything about the protagonist himself.
There are two main aspects of the antagonist, and it seems to me that one is the “good” antagonist and the other is the “bad” one. The good antagonist is the one who, if he does get his way, will make the protagonist’s life miserable for a long time. The bad antagonist is the one who is only trying to destroy the protagonist, as they’re trying to destroy each other.
