Independent voter

An independent voter or candidate is one who does not identify with a political party. There are many reasons why someone might register as an independent, but the most common ones are that they dislike both parties and want to avoid being labeled by either side, they’re still deciding which party’s platform best matches their views, or the individual has been registered with a specific party for years and just wants to switch affiliations without losing the ballot access of his/her preferred party.

One downside of registering as an independent is that it can’t be done from home. Typically, one must go through registration at your local DMV in order to change your affiliation status on file there , so if you decide you do like one.
