The way our life is presented on the page is so abstract. It’s a little like the way we write a book. The more we write, the more we learn. It’s the journey that we take, not the destination.
I think that’s true for any of us. We write to create the story we want to tell and the story we want to write. We write to be understood.
Writing for pleasure, to pass the time between reading and work, is an excellent way to become more aware of our own thoughts and feelings. We don’t write to be understood, we write because we want to be understood. If it takes us a year to write a book, we would be more likely to write each chapter in a sentence if we knew it was a sentence to begin with.
When we write, we want to understand the story we are writing for ourselves. We want to be fully understood, so we use metaphors to help us understand our writing. There are two main types of metaphors: descriptive and abstract.

A good example of this would be the sentence, “In a quiet room he would use a pencil to make marks on a piece of paper.” The purpose of this type of metaphor is to give the writer a general idea of how he feels about a particular situation while still making the reader understand something about the writer’s thought process.
You could take another example, a student writing a paper about math could write a metaphor like, By the time I’m done, the entire paper will have been scribbled on by my fingers. This type of metaphor is most often used when the writer is writing about something they don’t understand completely.
The writer’s interpretation of the situation should be reflected in the writing of the story. This type of metaphor can often be used to describe a lot of aspects of writing, including how you imagine a story should be told, how a reader should feel in an essay, or any number of other issues.
If you write something about something you don’t understand completely, and you’d like your readers to feel the same way about it, you can use this metaphor to describe what you’re writing about. It’s just as valid as having a reader feel the same way about something you do understand.
