How do you indent in Gmail? I don’t know. It’s been a while since I’ve needed to do that. Just go to your inbox and hit the “indent” button and that’s it.
You’re right, I do know how to indent in Gmail. Its called tabbing, and the action is very similar to how you indent in Microsoft Word or the Unix editor.
Tabbing is a very useful action for editors (like Gmail) because it makes it easier to edit and navigate between tabs. Gmail’s indenting toolbar has the same function, but you need to click on the “Tab” button in the top right corner to do that. That’s the only change, but I’m sure there’s a lot of other ways to indent in Gmail, and I’ll definitely be exploring them.
You can use the same trick with any text editor. Just indent the whole line, then indent each line by one space. If you indent by one space, you can indent in the middle of the line, or end the line by one space, but you can’t indent at the beginning or the end of a line. That’s right, you can’t indent in the middle of a line.
I know it sounds awful when I tell you this, but the only reason it works is because it uses a real text editor. If you use your browser, you can just copy/paste the text from your email and then press the Tab key at the top of the page to indent a line.
Like most software, Gmail is a mixture of browser, mail client, and text editor, so it is a terrible idea to blindly copy and paste your email into a text editor and then try to indent. Instead, you can use regular text editors that can cut and paste email. I use the indenter plugin in Gimp. When you insert a new email, click on the indenter icon in the toolbar, and you will see a dialog box.

So instead of using the double arrow to mark the end of an email, how many of you use the same email for several different purposes? If you use it for two different accounts, you can also use it for two different email addresses if you have two separate accounts. This is a much more compact solution if you’re using the same email for multiple purposes. But if you’re using the same email for multiple purposes, you can’t tell them apart.
This is where the double arrow can be useful. Instead of marking the end of an email as a double arrow, you can use it to mark the end of multiple emails as a double arrow. So if you have a project that goes back and forth between two different email accounts, you can both mark your emails as double arrows.
